Another test that is currently in the permitting process is a desalinization technique that uses waste heat from CalEnergy's geothermal plants located adjacent to the Sea. This process would remove salt from Sea water and return distilled water to the Sea. Because of the availability of waste heat, this process could conceivably increase the efficiency of the desalinization process without incurring high energy costs.

Full scale facility capital costs may be similar to in-sea ponds.
