The tests of the Solar Ponds Pilot Project and Salt Disposal Systems now underway will continue. Additional tests on the biology of the ponds and environmental health matters will be conducted.

Both the disposal and marketing of salt from the tests and future operational sites will be researched and evaluated. The Bureau of Reclamation and the Authority are considering increasing the scale of the tests and moving from a pilot project to demonstration projects.

Increasing salinity is a result of the high evaporation rates in the hot desert climates. Water flowing into the Sea adds the equivalent of a train of salt each day: several million tons a year.
