The
University of Redlands with the support of Representative Jerry
Lewis, serves as
a repository for all information about the Sea. This information
has been of great value to the Authority and the Science Office
and has proven to be a cost effective way to understand the Sea
through the use of maps, displays
and models.

Under
the able leadership of Dr. Milton Friend, the Science Office
undertook an unprecedented scope of research using both university
and private sector scientists. Although Dr. Friend retired in
January 2002, this research through the Science Office continues
to provide decision makers and the public with solid information,
upon which all actions and recommendations of the Authority are
based.
The
Science Office has held workshops to investigate a number of
issues including eutrophication, salinity, air quality and a
proposal from the Pacific Institute.
Some
other research done on the Salton Sea by the Science Subcommittee
and later the Science Office includes: chemical and physical
characteristics, contaminants of the sediments, studies of the
bacteria, algae, plankton, invertebrates, diatoms and nematodes of
the Sea, fish biology and ecology, biology of migratory and
resident waterbirds at the Sea and studies of avian diseases at
the Sea.
Five
million dollars of federal funds and $500,000 of state funds have
been committed by the Authority to support science and research. |
