New York Times Editors: Please accept the following Letter to the Editor from Andy Horne, President, Salton Sea Authority Board

Jan. 8, 2003

Dear Editor,

Salton Sea,  a major international resource, stands to become a victim of  California’s  water wars.

Its demise could create major environmental and air quality problems.

This was ignored by  your recent editorial.  Proponents of water transfers made the same mistake over 4 years ago and it  has come back to haunt California.

In  December, 22 California members Congress  chastised the Interior Department for dooming  water transfers because the Administration had not properly dealt with the Sea.

The 1998 Salton Sea Act required the Administration to submit a Salton Sea game plan by the year 2000.  Congress is still waiting.  And now those who ignored the relationship between water transfers from the Salton Sea basin and the health of the Salton Sea are waiting.

When it comes to water in our region, agricultural, urban and environmental needs must be addressed.   Ignore one component and deals collapse.
